across America by train

Here we have it folks...your guide to journeying across America BY TRAIN! About 4 years ago, my cousin Jessica and I came across Derek Low’s blog post describing his $213 train trip across the US; however, trying to find time to fit it into both our busy schedules was nearly impossible. BUT THE TIME FINALLY CAME! On December 26th, 2019, Jessi and I embarked on our long-awaited journey across the US.

This guide will give you an idea of what it’s like to take an Amtrak train from California to New York in under 5 days. If you want to get straight to the nitty gritty of the trip, scroll to the bottom of the blog. There you will find my most frequently asked questions and tips for doing the trip yourself!

  • First thing's first

Get to Emeryville, CA. I live in San Diego, so I flew from SD to Oakland and met Jessi at the airport. We stayed with some family for the night (shouts out Charolette and Gary, you guys are the best!) and headed to the Emeryville station the next morning around 8am.

  • the route

To get from San Francisco to New York city, you need to take two trains: the California Zephyr and the Lake Shore Limited. The California Zephyr, which is the first train we hopped on, runs from San Francisco to Chicago, and vice versa. Along the route you experience some of the greatest scenic views in America, including the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevadas, Moffat Tunnel, Colorado’s Gore, Truckee River, Donner Lake, and the Carquinez Strait. This leg of the trip has a duration of 51 hours and 20 minutes (approximately 3 days), with multiple short stops along the way. Besides the stops in Salt Lake City and Denver (which are 30 minutes long), all stops are less than 5 minutes.

FAQs

Where does the trip start and stop?

There are multiple ways to take the train across the US, but the recommended way is to take the California Zephyr from San Fransisco to Chicago, then the Lake Shore Limited from Chicago to New York.

How much does the trip cost?

Depends on how much you are willing to spend/how comfortable you want to be. You can get a seat in coach for around $250 one way, or you can splurge and get a superliner bedroom for around $1500-$2000 one way. It all really depends on what you want and what dates you go. We spent roughly $2300 for the entire trip (we only took the train one way) – but keep in mind we booked our tickets only a month in advance and the trip took place during the holidays.

How long is the trip?

You spend about 75 hours total on the train (3 days). However, if you stop somewhere, like Chicago, it will obviously tack on some time (hence why our trip was 4 days instead of 3).

Is the food good?

The food was better than I expected (at least on the California Zephyr). There was a pretty good variety of food with gluten-free and vegan options available. My faves were the chilaquiles, cheeseburger, and chicken & rice dinner.

Do you stop anywhere between California and Chicago?

No, unless you opt to get off somewhere and stay the night. All stops are about 3 minutes long, except for the two in Salt Lake and Denver which are 30 minutes (enough time to step off the train and get some fresh air). But really, Denver is the only one you would really get to step off the train for, given that the Salt Lake stop is at 3am.

Does it get claustrophobic?

We did not get claustrophobic, BUT the rooms are a little tight so just keep that in mind. We spent almost all of our time in the observation car, which is very open. You will only really spend time in the room when you’re sleeping.

Did you get bored?

Honestly not at all. It was nice to be able to just relax. If you’re someone who gets super anxious and needs to be up and moving, this trip will be a challenge, not going to lie. But overall, it is a great way to just take time for yourself and kick your feet up.

TIPS:

  • Bring body wipes...you probably won’t want to use the shower on the train. It’s super small.

  • Bring your own blanket and pillow if you can, the ones they provide aren’t great.

  • Don’t forget to pack a lot of moisturizer, lotion, and chapstick...the air gets pretty dry in the train.

  • Bring a hydro flask to refill with water

  • Bring a deck of cards

  • Bring fabric softener to remove static

  • BRING YOUR OWN WINE/LIQUOR/SNACKS. Trust me on this. It will save you a bunch of $$$
